EU - The role of the agro-legal translator in the new scenario of global food safety: application of legal Regulations to labelling

European Union

Jun 27, 2024

In the current socio-economic context, food represents the basis of a globalised pro- duction and distribution market that generates a huge number of agri-food texts requiring translation. In addition to legal documents such as food regulations, the
agro-legal translator must transfer complex hybrid informational texts to consumers, such as food labels, which require in-depth knowledge of current regulations. In the struggle between the persuasive and the informative functions of these texts, they can end up compromising the ethics of the translator. For this reason, after reflecting on the role of the agro-legal translator, the specificities of food labelling and its adaptation to regulations, a corpus of labels will be studied in order to analyse their linguistic and translation adequacy, as well as their conformity with the legislation and their commitment to the consumer’s right to clear and truthful information.
