New animal welfare information requirements for the labeling of food of animal origin
Switzerland
Jun 02, 2025
The Federal Council announces that as of July 1, products of animal origin will have to specify on their labels whether they have been obtained with “painful practices” or “unnecessary cruelty”. The obligation will not only affect domestic products, but also imported products.
All establishments offering the relevant food products are subject to the reporting obligation, whether they are catering establishments, small businesses or retail outlets. These businesses must verify, as part of their self-monitoring, whether they are subject to the reporting obligation. With these measures, the Federal Council implements Motion 20.4267 “Declaration of production methods prohibited in Switzerland” of the Science, Education and Culture Committee of the Council of States, transmitted by Parliament in June 2021.
The rule, which will have a two-year moratorium, must be applied by the agri-food sector, including restaurants, supermarkets and small stores, among others. The Swiss government was already a pioneer on January 1, 2020, when it banned the crushing of live chickens, a very frequent habit in the sector, which slaughters millions of males annually, for example, in poultry farms for egg production.
