The applicable legal framework for food supplements is the Chilean Food Code (Reglamento Sanitario de los Alimentos - RSA). Food supplements and foods for sports people are regulated under Title XXIX, specifically in Articles 534-538 and Articles 539-541, respectively.
I. FOOD SUPPLEMENTS
(i) Food supplements (suplementos alimentarios) are those products made or specially prepared to supplement the diet for healthy purposes and contribute to maintaining or protecting physiological states such as adolescence, adulthood or the elderly.
(ii) They may be composed of a nutrient, a mixture of nutrients and other components naturally present in food, including compounds such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, lipids, dietary fibre or their constituents.
(iii) They may be presented in different conventional form, such as powders, liquids, granules, pills, tablets, capsules etc.
II. FOOD FOR SPORTS PEOPLE
(i) Food for sports people (alimentos para deportistas) are those products formulated to meet the requirements of healthy individuals, especially those who perform heavy and prolonged physical exercises.
(ii) These foods may be composed of a food ingredient or a mixture of these. One or more nutrients may be added, such as carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and other components naturally present in food, such as caffeine or those expressly authorised in these regulations.
(iii) When vitamins and/or minerals are added, the product may be qualified as a food supplement or a fortified food.
