VII. COMPLIANCE WITH GENERAL LABELLING RULES
The labelling of foods and beverages is regulated in Mexico under NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010.
In March 2020, an amendment to NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010 included Front-of-Pack warning labels for foods and beverages high in energy, sugar, saturated fat, trans fat and sodium. This comes into force from 1st October 2020 and applies to all prepacked foods.
(i) Specific labelling requirements for food supplements
Specific labelling requirements for food supplements apply under Art. 173, 174 and Appendix XVII.3 of the Regulation.
Mandatory information includes the following:
- General prohibitions
- Specific and general denomination
- Ingredient list; plants (common & botanical name)
- Indication of hazardous substances
- Nutrition declaration: Macro- and micronutrients on a per 100g and per portion basis
- Name & address manufacturer/importer
- Storage instructions and lot number
- Mandatory warning
- Expiry date
It is prohibited to provide confusing, exaggerated or misleading information concerning the composition, origin, effects and other properties of the products, neither showing preventive, rehabilitating or therapeutic indications.
It is prohibited to use denominations, figures or declarations related to diseases, symptoms, syndromes, anatomical information, physiological phenomena or statements which imply that the product alone covers nutritional requirements of the individual, or that it could substitute a meal.
