Exemptions to fruit labeling requirements published

Canada

Jun 06, 2025

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced amendments to the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR), specifically on “Exemptions to labeling requirements for fresh fruits and vegetables".

Exemptions from the SFCR labelling requirements

The labelling requirements of the SFCR do not apply in respect of prepackaged fresh fruits or vegetables that are:

  • packaged in a wrapper, or confining band, that is less than 13 mm (½ inch) in width [213(b), SFCR], or
  • packaged in a transparent protective wrapper or bag that shows no information other than a price, bar code, number code, environmental statement or product treatment symbol [213(c), SFCR]

However, if fresh fruits or vegetables are packaged in a wrapper or confining band that is less than 13 mm in width and a tag is attached, the exemption no longer applies because the tag provides sufficient surface area for the mandatory labelling information to appear.
