BPOM plans to launch Nutri-Grade labeling on food and beverages by 2025

Indonesia

Mar 12, 2025

The head of the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM In Indonesian), Taruna Ikrar, stated that her party is optimistic that the nutri-grade policy or labeling of sugar, salt and fat (GGL) content in food and beverages can be completed this year, which is currently in a harmonization process.

When meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday, Taruna said the creation of the policy was in accordance with the mandate of Law Number 17 of 2023 on Health and its implementing regulations, namely Government Regulation (PP) Number 28 of 2024. Currently, his party is discussing the policy with businessmen and the industry, to determine the design of the label.

“There are influencing factors, whether we regulate labeling according to color, nutritional grade or composition, or a warning. There are currently three models; there is no agreement yet,” he said.

Taruna explained that BPOM's healthy label initiative will run in parallel with the nutri-grade policy that will be ratified later. The healthy label, he said, has already been implemented and to obtain it there are requirements that must be met, for example the correct nutri-grade level.
