Codex publishes updated general standard for the labeling of prepackaged foods

The Codex Alimentarius has published an update to CXS 1-1985 “General Standard for the Labeling of Prepackaged Foods” (2024).

The most relevant changes are:

  • Incorporation of new definitions

Allergenic foods, Food allergen, Coeliac disease and Differentiation between “best before date” and “use by date”.

  • Changes in the declaration of allergens.

Must now be labeled as “wheat”, “rye” or “barley”, instead of just “gluten-containing cereals”. The use of the term “gluten” is allowed as additional information.

  • Soy is removed from the list of mandatory allergens.

It is now on the list of recommended allergens, depending on specific regulations in each country.

  • Sesame is incorporated as a mandatory allergen: Its declaration on labeling is now mandatory.
  • New recommended allergens

Some may become mandatory in certain countries, depending on specific risk assessments.

  • Allergens must be highlighted on the label in bold, different color or other visible format.
