BBS propose to declare as mandatory the standard on labeling of prepackaged foods

Belize

Nov 20, 2024

The Belize Bureau of Standards (BBS) proposes to recommend to the Standards Advisory Board that Belize Standard 1: Part 3:2024 (revised) Specification for Labeling Part 3: Labeling of Prepackaged Foods be declared a mandatory standard.

The standard for prepackaged foods has been revised to align with current labeling trends and in an effort to prevent fraud and deception arising from misleading labeling, as well as to provide adequate information to the consumer or user of prepackaged foods. The changes include language requirements for recognizing product labels in Spanish; the addition of the Nutrition Facts statement as a fundamental requirement; and emphasis on allergen labeling. It is intended that all manufacturers, importers, distributors and other entities involved in the production and/or marketing of prepackaged foods in Belize will comply with the requirements of this standard. In addition, it is expected that this standard will assist Belizean producers in meeting the labeling requirements of regional and extra-regional markets.
