Rospotrebnadzor will strengthen control over marketing of dietary supplements and food additives

Russia

Sep 27, 2024

During the meeting of the State Commission for Combating Illicit Trafficking in Industrial Products, the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation instructed the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor in Russian) to develop indicators of the risk of violations of mandatory requirements in the exercise of state control over dietary supplements and food additives. In addition, the relevant departments were tasked to consider the issue of introducing conformity assessment of food additives “in the form of state registration”, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade was tasked to consider the issue of introducing sports nutrition labeling.

As the government stressed, the mechanism of state control by means of risk indicators “has proved to be one of the effective tools in the fight against illegal trafficking, as it allows unscheduled on-site inspections only if such indicators are triggered. “In early August 2024, Rospotrebnadzor already proposed to add to its own order indicators containing markers for various products that would affect the participants in the circulation of dietary supplements, but the adjustments were not accepted.
