The Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology of the University of Chile (INTA in Spanish) has published the document used as the basis for the public consultation of the Ministry of Health on sweetener labeling.
INTA conducted the analysis of existing data to evaluate the use of sweeteners in packaged foods and consumption, additionally reviewed the literature on health problems associated with sweetener intake, including alterations in glucose metabolism, and made a search of the measures adopted by other countries to prevent the use of these additives. With this information, a list of 21 proposals for potential actions to reduce the excessive consumption of sweeteners was drawn up, including labeling, taxes, education, marketing regulation and others. A panel of experts from academia, health and nutrition professionals and the civil population rated the measures according to relevance and feasibility.
