Chile proposes new labelling on sweeteners

The Ministry of Health has proposed a modification to the Food Sanitary Regulations, Supreme Decree No. 977/96, introducing a new Article 120 Ter. This amendment aims to mandate precautionary labels on foods containing sweeteners, warning “Contains sweeteners. Avoid consumption by children”. This initiative responds to WHO evidence on sweeteners’ negative effects and high national consumption rates among children. The Ministry invites public consultation to improve this regulation, ensuring informed decisions to protect the most vulnerable population. The consultation period runs from June 19 to August 25, 2024.
