Hawaii introduces new coffee labeling rules
USA
Jun 24, 2024
Starting July 1, 2024, new labelling requirements for Hawai‘i-branded coffee will be enforced. The Hawaiian Coffee Labeling Act 211 mandates that all coffee products referencing Hawai‘i must disclose the location of the coffee’s origin and the percentage by weight of locally grown and foreign coffee. Products labelled as 100% Hawaiian must be entirely grown and processed in Hawai‘i. Sharon Hurd, chairperson of the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture, noted the challenge in enforcing the law due to limited inspection staff but promised increased inspections and reliance on complaints for immediate enforcement.
