CFA asks FDA to consider listing gluten as an allergen on food labels

The Consumer Federation of America (CFA) submitted a comment to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for new labeling requirements related to gluten. While nearly all major U.S. trading partners have adopted requirements to list if a food contains gluten, the U.S. remains an outlier, forcing those suffering from celiac disease to search out foods labeled “gluten-free.” The CFA requests the FDA to treat gluten as a “major allergen,” and to require labels on foods containing gluten to say that the food “contains gluten.”
