Illinois proposes new food labeling regulation

The Illinois Department of Agriculture must publish specific definitions for “quality date,” “safety date,” and “expiration date.” The Department will also encourage food manufacturers, distributors and retailers to voluntarily use these specific terms.

When lawmakers debated the legislation during the 2023 session, opponents raised concerns about the state regulating something they feel is more in the wheelhouse of the federal government.
