Partial Amendment on the Food Labeling Standards

Japan

Jul 03, 2023

The Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan has published the “Partial amendment of food labeling standards" as per section 13 of the Food Sanitation Law.

The scope of the document includes the following points:

  • Food such as Infant Formula, Infant Food for special medical purposes, etc., as specified in the regulation shall comply with Infant standards;
  • The label shall clearly indicate the Infant Food is subject to the standards for radioactive substances based on the food sanitation law;
  • The standard prohibits misleading consumers about foods that are not Infant Foods;
  • Baby Foods must be labeled as "Foods for Infants". The method of labeling has been revised because there is a risk that consumers may not be able to accurately identify and understand that the foods are subject to the standards for radioactive substances.

The regulation is effective from June 29, 2023.
