COMMISSION TO PROPOSE A HARMONIZED FRONT OF PACK NUTRITION LABEL INDICATION

May 31, 2020

The Commission considers that there is a need for a mandatory front of pack labelling scheme which assists consumers in making healthier food choices. Within the remit of the presented Farm to For Strategy, the Commission has presented the long awaited report on the use of additional forms of expression and presentation and indicated it will work on a legislative proposal for a harmonised front of pack labelling scheme. The report outlines the different schemes that currently exist in and outside of Europe, concluding that most schemes apply some form of nutrient profiling. In other words, they rate the nutritional quality of foods. Referring to studies on the use and effectiveness of front of pack labelling schemes, there would be the potential to positively influence consumer food choices.
