ITALY URGES EU COMMISSION TO EXTEND COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELLING RULES FOR ALL FOODS

Italy

Mar 29, 2020

A joint letter from the Italian Ministers of Agriculture and Economic development asks the European Commission to enact further rules on the indication of the country of origin extending to all foods. Regulation 775/2018 on the rules for indicating the country of origin or place of provenance of the primary ingredient of a food, would not provide sufficient information to consumers. Reference is made to national initiatives of several number of countries (France, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Lithuania, Romania and Finland) that require that the country of origin is indicated for the food and/or the main ingredients of the food (e.g. a Italian decree requires that the origin of durum wheat is indicated for pasta).
