FSSAI reviews the limits of the "refractive index" parameter in coconut oil standards to control its quality

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated the revision of the Regulations for the Amendment of Food Safety and Standards (Food Products and Food Additives Standards), 2019, in relation to the revaluation of the limits of the parameter Refractive index in coconut oil standards that will help To control its quality.

The draft regulations are in the process of being notified and the process of draft notification, consideration of comments, if any that may be received thereon and the finalization of these regulations is likely to take some time. Meanwhile, to address the issue of the food business operators to comply with the present standard of coconut oil for the said parameter and to harmonize with the international standards- Codex, it has been decided to implement this parameter with immediate effect. 

The draft proposed, “In the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, under Regulations 2.2, in Sub-Regulation 2.2.1 in Clause (1) for the standards of coconut oil, the parameter Refractive Index at 40 C shall be substituted by Refractive Index at 40 C: 1.4480-1.4500.”
