EU - Regulatory Aspects on Food Safety and Standards

European Union

Jun 12, 2025

Food adulteration and contamination have resulted in many health suffering and health hazards globally. As a result of such incidents, efforts have been made to lay down science-based legislation to monitor the manufacturing, selling, distribution, storage, import, safety, and quality of any food products. The United States framed its first food legislation in the early 1900s due to several food contamination outbreaks. Similarly, the UK started food regulation in the early days, resulting in the modern legislation, the Food Safety Act 1990. India also passed its food legislation in the early 1940s and published the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (1954). After that, many acts and orders have been published on the prevention of adulterants and the safety of food, including the Food Safety and Standard Act (FSSA) 2006, following the Food Safety and Standard Rules, 2011, and several regulations to prevent adulteration and contamination of food products. This chapter provides an overview of Indian food legislation and a brief discussion of the USA and the European Union and their role in securing food safety and quality.
