Peru - Food safety and its relevance in Free Trade Agreements (FTA)

Peru

Jun 16, 2025

This article refers to food safety as an important issue in the framework of sanitary and phytosanitary measures and international trade. The study refers to sanitary and phytosanitary measures at the multilateral level -World Trade Organization- and their role in the treatment of food safety linked to international trade between countries, and how it serves as a platform for further developments in the context of free trade agreements (FTAs), and in particular the FTAs signed by Peru. After reviewing this issue at the multilateral and bilateral/regional levels, it is questioned whether a specific provision on food safety is needed in FTAs or whether it can be effectively addressed through the substantive provisions on sanitary and phytosanitary measures in FTAs.
