Approved new standard for vegetable oil quality

Spain

May 12, 2025

The Council of Ministers has approved a quality standard for vegetable oils, updating the existing technical and health regulations governing these edible fats, which have been in effect since 1983. This long-awaited revision addresses the need to align the regulations with the current realities of the sector and the evolving demands of consumers, following over 40 years without significant changes. The new standard expands the recognition of vegetable oils to include new raw materials, which were previously restricted to only eight refined types (soybean, sunflower, peanut, cotton, corn germ, rapeseed, safflower, and grape seed), creating a clear competitive disadvantage for the Spanish industry compared to products manufactured in other European Union (EU) countries. The new regulation allows for the production of oils in Spain derived from any fruit or seed permitted for food use in the EU, such as avocado or walnut. The standard maintains the use of the designation 'virgin' or 'extra virgin' for olive oils, as established by the quality standard in effect since 2021. It also prohibits the blending of vegetable oils with olive oils.
