The industry has embraced the new food coloring standard established by CFIA

China

May 12, 2025

Recently, the China National Food Industry Association (CNFIA) and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced a new industrial standard titled 'Coloring Food Ingredients for the Food Industry.'

This standard aims to regulate the production, usage, and labeling of food colorants. It specifies that food colorants must be derived from fruits, vegetables, plants, or algae that are commonly consumed as food. According to the new standard, food colorants can only be produced using physical processing methods without the use of chemical solvents.

Furthermore, they must retain the essential properties of the raw materials, such as color, flavor, and nutritional value. Strict testing and quality control measures are required to ensure that all ingredients in food colorants meet the highest safety standards. Due to their production method, the standard classifies food colorants as ingredients rather than additives, which allows for clear and accurate labeling that reflects the characteristics and functions of the colorant, such as carrot food coloring.
