The Government approves the modification of the honey quality standard

Spain

Feb 04, 2025

The Council of Ministers has approved a royal decree amending the quality standard for honey, in order to incorporate into national legislation the amendments introduced in the European Union directive, promoted during the Spanish Presidency of the Council in the second half of 2023 and completed in 2024.

One of the objectives of the new regulation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is to improve the information provided to the consumer on the origin of honey. Thus, it establishes the obligation to indicate in the main visual field of the label the percentage represented by each of the countries of origin of the honey, in the case of blends.

With the incorporation of this amendment to the national legislation, the aim is to protect and increase the competitiveness of honeys of Spanish origin and to strengthen the national market, providing it with greater transparency and information, and positioning the products against imported honeys.
