Amendments to technical regulations for edible fats and oils in force

EAEU

Dec 24, 2024

As of December 22, amendments to the Customs Union's technical regulations “Technical Regulations for Fats and Oils Products”, which were adopted by the Commission's Council Decision dated December 12, 2023 No. 149, come into force.

The changes clarify certain provisions of the technical regulations regarding definitions of edible fats and oils products, labeling requirements, processes of their production and transportation, and also eliminate ambiguous interpretation of the rules of the technical regulations.

In particular, there are requirements for the process and conditions of transport (transportation) of edible fats and oil products, including the use of vehicles intended for the transport of fats and oil products in bulk. Lists of permitted and prohibited preloads have been established when transporting edible fats and oils in bulk by water.

In addition, to improve the safety of these products, standardization of the permissible level of the contaminant “fatty acid glycidyl esters in terms of glycidol” will be introduced as of January 1, 2025. This issue is of great social significance, as in recent years data have accumulated on the presence of fatty acid glycidyl esters in vegetable oils and products using them and their negative impact on health. These substances are technological contaminants and can be formed in all vegetable oils during high temperature processing.
