New  Standards on honey products

The National Bureau of Food and Agricultural Products Standards has published a standard for honey products. The aspects to highlight from the standard are:

  1. Scope and Definition; Product Classification (Dehydrated Processed Honey and Unprocessed Honey).
  2. Quality Standard:
  • No other ingredients shall be added to the honey; sensory requirements such as characteristic smell and color of honey.
  • Chemical index requirements (e.g. unprocessed honey: moisture content ≤ 35%, sucrose content ≤ 5%, PH value: 2.5-4, hydroxymethylfurfural value ≤ 40mg/kg, etc.).
  • Quality acceptance standard: beeswax ≤ 0.5%, no bubbles affecting the appearance and quality of the honey, and no additives; and standards for contaminants and microbiological are shown in the table below.
