European Union
Jun 28, 2024
On June 20, 2024, the Council of the European Union adopted Decision (EU) 2024/1811, outlining the EU’s position in the International Olive Council (IOC). This decision focuses on updating trade standards for olive oils and olive pomace oils. It also includes improvements to methods for assessing the taste of virgin olive oils and measuring waxes and ethyl esters of fatty acids using gas chromatography. These updates, developed by EU experts, aim to harmonize international standards and ensure fair competition. The EU supports these decisions, which will impact international trade and influence EU laws on olive oil marketing standards. EU representatives can agree on technical changes without further Council approval.
