East African community release draft standard for brown rice

The East African Community (EAC) has published a draft East African Standard (DEAS 765:2024) for brown rice, setting guidelines for quality, contaminants, hygiene, packaging, labeling and sampling. This standard aims to harmonize quality requirements across the region, ensuring safe and high-quality brown rice for consumers. Key aspects include strict limits on pesticide residues and heavy metals, detailed labeling requirements and hygiene protocols for production and handling. The initiative seeks to facilitate trade and protect consumers within the EAC.
