FSSAI amends standard for Packaged Drinking Water

The Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued the "Direction under Section 16(5) of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 regarding reoperationalization of Draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations related to standards of Packaged Drinking Water (other than Mineral Water)".

With the Direction the FSSAI informs that the final amendment regulations have been approved. During the time required for the final notification and publication in the Gazette of India and to allow the FBOs to formulate Packaged Drinking Water (other than Mineral Water), it has been decided to re-operationalize the following provision with effect from 1 January 2024:

"Under sub-regulation 2.10.8 relating to the standards of Packaged Drinking Water, the Permissible Limits given in column (3) of the Sr. No. 5 of Table 2. Sr. No. 15 and 16 of Table 3 shall be substituted with the following: 

  • Total dissolved solids (TDS) in packaged drinking water: 75-500mg/l;
  • Calcium:10-75mg/l;
  • Magnesium:at 5-30mg/l".
