Draft amendments to food labeling standards

The Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has proposed the following amendments to the "Labeling Standards for Food Products" (Announcement No. 2023-614):

  • in order to prevent consumers misunderstanding, foods intended for infants and young children must be labeled as "Food for infants";
  • it is permitted to use the raw material name in the product name of mixed cooking oils;
  • calories for alcoholic beverages shall be displayed in larger and bolder letters to improve visibility;
  • for products containing sweetener(s), in case the claim "sugar free", "unsweetened" or similar is used on the label, information on calories and indication that sweetener(s) are used shall be displayed.

The amendments are under public consultation until February 26, 2024.
