FDA proposes new requirements for canned tuna

USA

Aug 25, 2023

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a proposed rule to revise the standard of identity and standard of fill of container for canned tuna. If finalized, the proposed rule would, among other things:

  • Revise the weighing methods used to determine the standard fill of container;
  • Allow the use of safe and suitable flavorings and spices as optional ingredients; and
  • Clarify that the use of a packing medium is optional

The canned tuna label name should contain the type of medium, such as "canned tuna in oil", "canned tuna in brine", etc., if the product contains different varieties of tuna, the label name should indicate "mixed product" or similar terms.

The notice will be published in the Federal Register on August 25, 2023, and is subject to a 90-day comment period.
