"Meaty" denominations debate transferred to the European Court of Justice

The French Conseil d’Etat has transferred parts of the court case brought forward by the European Vegetarian Union (EVU) and the Association Végétarienne de France (AVF) against the prohibition of the use of “meaty” denominations for plant-based foods, to the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The ECJ is expected to answer a series of questions on labeling of plant-based foods, addressing the use of names for food products containing plant proteins and their potential impact on consumer understanding, before the Conseil d’Etat can pursue its ruling.
