Quality and safety of dietary salt

The National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA) published a draft decree on the quality and safety of food salt. The main objective of the draft decree is as follows:

  • Define certain categories of salt placed on the market, such as salt intended for industry, seasoning salt, low sodium salt, fleur de sel and coarse salt;
  • Establish specific requirements for flower of salt and coarse salt;
  • Make mandatory the iodization of salt intended for both direct sale to the consumer and the food industry with the exception of Fleur du sel and Gros sel;
  • Mandate the iodization of edible salt used as an ingredient in imported processed food products;
  • Eliminate the requirement relating to the mention of iodine content on labeling;
  • Clearly specify the methods of labeling and packaging of edible salt;
  • To fix the model of the representative logo of iodized salt in the annex of this draft decree; To establish the model of the representative logo of iodized salt in the annex of this draft decree.
