EU’s top court: Opinion confirms that labeling of origin of food is only allowed if it is "justified"

The Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Communities (ECJ) declared that the EU's harmonized framework for food labeling "does not prevent Member States from adopting measures that provide additional mandatory details on origin or provenance" .

National measures requiring mandatory labelling of origin and provenance for foodstuff are allowed under the EU law but need to be justified, Europe’s highest court has found.
