FRANCE - NEW LAW REINFORCES FOOD LABELLING RULES, INCLUDING RESTRICTIONS FOR VEGETARIAN FOODS

France

Jul 05, 2020

An amendment to the French Consumer Code (Code de la consommation) poses additional labelling requirements for prepacked foods. The new rules have been adopted for the alleged purpose of meeting consumer’s wishes to be better informed about the origin and quality of foodstuffs.

Most striking is the introduction of a ban for using the names of animal based foods for foods with vegetable proteins. An additional decree will determine the types of vegetable protein to which the ban will apply as well as defining the conditions of use and possible sanctions on infringements.

Among specific changes for cheeses and wine, the amendment requires the indication of the country of origin for beers and products which contain cocoa as well as all of the countries of origin of the honeys that are used in honey blends. The new rules also explicitly require that for foods which are sold online, all the mandatory labelling information that is required on food labels is shown.
