Regulation UE 2021/2142 on maximum levels of opium alkaloids in foods

European Union

Dec 13, 2021

Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/2142 of 3 December 2021 amending Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 as regards maximum levels of opium alkaloids in certain foodstuffs

Maximum levels for morphine and codeine, expressed in morphine equivalent, should be established for poppy seeds marketed for the final consumer and bakery products containing poppy seeds or their derivative products. These contents should be set considering that food processing can reduce the alkaloid content of raw poppy seeds in the final product by 25-100%. Since it is desirable for the bakery product manufacturer to have detailed information, including morphine equivalent content, on the poppy seeds used as ingredients in such products, the poppy seed supplier should provide that information to the product producer bakery.

This Regulation shall enter into force twenty days after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. It will be applicable from July 1, 2022.
