EU - Regulatory Aspects of Food Analogues in Food Sciences. Food Analogues in the European Union: A Legal Perspective

European Union

Dec 02, 2024

Food business operators willing to place on the market food analogues can sometimes meet some obstacles of legislative nature. Within the European Union, for instance, some types of food (insects and thereof, cell-based food, etc.) can enter the EU market only after the successful completion of an authorization procedure as novel food. Other products, such as plant-based alternatives to products of animal origin, must comply with some strict rules on names, labelling and marketing, to avoid misleading consumers.

The chapter will therefore offer an overview of the regulatory framework applicable to food analogues, in order to identify its pros and cons, and taking into account the Codex Alimentarius texts and ongoing activities.
