New Bill to labeling lab-grown and insect-based meats
USA
Apr 04, 2025
The North Carolina State House Health Committee has approved House Bill 471. The bill seeks to require manufacturers to include terms such as “lab-grown” or “insect-grown” before traditional meat-related terms such as ‘hamburger’ or “steak.”
The bill does not include terminology for plant-based products, unlike similar bills that have failed in the past. Plant-based products are already widely available on North Carolina shelves and most are clearly labeled.
House Bill 471 also seeks to ensure that labels are printed in a size that is neither too large nor too small to read.
