The California Assembly voted to pass California Assembly Bill (AB) 2316, named the California School Food Safety Act, which aims to ban several synthetic food dyes from foods sold or offered at public schools in the state due to concerns about their toxicity. The bill will now go to Governor Gavin Newsom to be signed into law.
The bill stems from concerns these dyes would harm children’s ability to learn, as they have been linked to behavioral difficulties and decreased attention among children, according to a 2021 study by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.
Products containing these additives could still be sold in the rest of the state. The ban only applies to California public schools and charter schools.
