Representatives of Rospotrebnadzor participated in the 55th meeting of the Codex Alimentarius Committee on Food Additives, which was held March 24-28 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The meeting discussed amendments to the Commission's General Standard for Food Additives, including maximum levels for their content.
The Russian delegation expressed concern about the safety of some additives. In particular, Rospotrebnadzor spoke out against the use of amaranth coloring, the use of which is banned in the food industry in Russia and EAEU countries. The representatives of the agency pointed out the insufficient study of the safety of this substance and its possible harm to the health of consumers.
The draft standard for baker's yeast was also discussed. The Russian side opposed the possibility of using live strains of transgenic microorganisms in yeast. This position was supported by other member countries of the Commission, so this point was excluded from the draft document.
