Congress approves the Food Waste Law

Spain

Mar 19, 2025

The Congress of Deputies has concluded on Thursday the processing in Parliament of the new Law on Prevention of Food Losses and Food Waste, which can now be published and enter into force.

This regulation aims to reduce the figure of food waste, which in 2023 stood at 1.214 million tons in Spain. Among the new features introduced by the regulation are the mandatory preparation of loss and waste prevention plans by all companies in the food chain.

In case of waste, the priority will always have to be human consumption. Likewise, catering companies will be obliged to offer customers the possibility of taking away unconsumed food in reusable or recyclable containers, a service that will be free of charge, except in the case of plastic containers, the cost of which will have to be borne by the consumer.
