France introduces new score calculation of Nutri-Score

France

Mar 20, 2025

France introduced Order of March 14, 2025 establishing the form of presentation complementary to Nutri-Score. The Order has been introduced following the recommendations of a scientific committee of nutrition experts to adapt the tool to scientific advances and the demands of the different countries adhering to the system.

The score calculation method was introduced to take into account the specifics of certain food categories (such as added fats (butter, oil), starchy foods, dairy products and drinks). Between 30 and 40% of products will have their score changed.

The main changes concern the following categories:

  • Oils with a lower saturated fatty acid content (olive, rapeseed or walnut oil, for example) are rated B and no longer C.
  • Some oily fish rich in omega 3 (sardines, mackerel, etc.) are rated higher.
  • It is easier to differentiate between whole starchy foods (bread, rice) and refined starchy foods.
  • Salty and sweet products are rated more severely.
  • Water is the only beverage rated A; low-sugar drinks are rated higher.
  • Drinks with sweeteners are no longer rated B but from C to E;
  • Milk, flavored and sweetened milks, drinking yogurts and plant-based drinks (almond, soy, rice, etc.) are calculated using the beverage algorithm to facilitate comparison.

As of March 14, 2025, companies involved in the Nutri-Score scheme have two years to update their packaging to the new Nutri-Score. The logo with a "New calculation" box indicates products incorporating the new Nutri-Score. The inclusion of the Nutri-Score on the front of the packaging remains voluntary.
