Portugal makes Nutri-Score system optional

Portugal

Jun 11, 2024

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of Portugal has announced that it is revoking the implementation of the Nutri-Score, which was implemented by the previous administration on April 5, 2023.

As of June 4, 2024, under the direction of Secretary of State for Agriculture João Manuel Moura Rodrigues, the adoption of simplified nutritional labeling systems is now optional for economic operators. The General Directorate of Food and Veterinary (DGAV) will define suitable models for Portuguese food products.

This decision addresses concerns over the current nutritional traffic light system, which has been criticized for creating confusing classifications. This move by Portugal has been received well by other EU Member States that were sceptical of the Nutriscore system, such as Italy.
