ANSES issues warning on dietary supplements based on Garcinia cambogia plant

France

Mar 12, 2025

Following a case of fatal fulminant hepatitis and several other cases of serious effects reported to its nutrivigilance system, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Safety (ANSES in French) initiated an expertise to draw up an inventory of adverse effects caused by the consumption of food supplements based on Garcinia cambogia Desr.

ANSES carried out an exhaustive analysis of the cases identified by various French, European and North American surveillance systems, complemented by a bibliographic review. Thus, cases of hepatic, psychiatric, digestive (pancreatitis), cardiac and muscular (rhabdomyolysis) involvement have been identified. In the French nutrivigilance system alone, 38 reports of adverse effects were reported between 2009 and March 2024. The Agency also identified several drug-drug interactions that may lead to an increase in adverse effects or a loss of efficacy of the drug.
