Ministry of Agriculture will implement the amendment on the labelling of plant-based alternatives to meat products

Czech Republic

Jan 27, 2025

The Ministry of Agriculture has decided not to introduce stricter labeling of vegetable alternatives to meat products and has removed the controversial passage from the relevant amendment to the decree. This was reported on the X channel by the head of the department, Marek Výborný (KDU-ČSL).

Last summer, the ministry had proposed banning the use of certain meat-based names for plant-based alternatives. This meant that terms such as ham and bacon would not be allowed on the labels of plant-based products.

The Minister of Agriculture, Marek Výborný, after studying the comments received, decided not to amend the decree. He believes that the current rules are sufficient and trusts that manufacturers will label their products accurately. This decision has provoked mixed reactions: some praise the reduction of bureaucracy and others criticize that priority is given to the interests of organic producers.
