New draft guidance on the labeling of plant-based foods

USA

Jan 10, 2025

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published Draft Guidance for Industry: Labeling of Plant-Based Alternatives to Animal-Derived Foods. The draft guidance is intended to provide industry with best practices for naming and labeling plant-based alternatives to eggs, seafood, poultry, meat, and dairy, excluding plant-based milk alternatives. The guidance, if finalized, will help industry develop labels that help consumers understand the nature of plant-based alternative foods, including differences among these products, so they can make informed decisions.

The scope of this guidance includes plant-based alternatives to eggs, seafood, poultry, meat, and dairy products (excluding plant-based milk alternatives) that fall under FDA jurisdiction.   This draft guidance does not address the naming and labeling of plant-based milk alternatives; that topic is being addressed elsewhere.
