Congressmen call for ban on Red 3 dye as food additive

Twenty-three members of the U.S. Congress sent a letter to James (Jim) Jones, Deputy Commissioner for Human Food at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Kristi Muldoon Jacobs, Ph.D., Acting Director of FDA's Office of Food Additive Safety, urging the agency to ban red dye 3 as a food additive. Red 3 is a synthetic food dye made from petroleum and is used in thousands of foods, including candies marketed to children.
