FDA bans brominated vegetable oil in food

USA

Jul 05, 2024

The FDA has banned the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food, effective August 2, 2024.

This decision follows extensive research indicating potential health risks, including adverse effects on the thyroid. BVO was previously used in small quantities as a stabilizer in citrus-flavored beverages.

The FDA's final rule mandates a one-year compliance period for companies to reformulate and relabel products.
