The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has announced a draft revision of the “Standards and Specifications for Food Additives” (Notice No. 2024-308). The changes aim to ease regulations requiring proof of natural origin for preservatives and broaden the definition of natural preservatives to include animal-derived materials. Additionally, standards for six residues in alcoholic beverages will be improved, and usage standards for additives like hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate will be updated. Terms and product names will be reorganized for clarity, and testing methods for 28 additives will be enhanced for accurate analysis. Public comments are invited until August 26, 2024.
