India releases draft amendments to food additive regulation

On June 5th, 2024, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) proposed amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. Key changes include replacing "nutritive sweeteners" with "sweeteners" in synthetic syrups for carbonated water and removing the minimum total soluble solid content requirement. For culinary pastes and sauces, acidity limits are no longer applicable for retort/aseptically processed products. Specific parameters for whole maize (corn) flour have been established. Additionally, new requirements for ragi flour include total ash content, alcoholic acidity, and calcium content.
