European Commission changes conditions of use for tartrates food additives

On the 24th of May, the European Commission (EC) has amended Regulation 1333/2008 on food additives to remove the unrestricted use of tartaric acid (L(+)-) (E 334), sodium tartrates (E 335), potassium tartrates (E 336), sodium potassium tartrate (E 337) and calcium tartrate (E 354). With this amendment, these additives are no longer authorized for all foods but have been authorized for use in specific food groups only. For each group, new maximum levels have been introduced for of the mentioned additives.
